Name of Project: Nairobi Urban Health Equity Gauge

Focus:
The Nairobi urban Gauge seeks to analyse existing demograhic and health data to map health disparities in Nairobi. A ‘Voices from the slums’ newsletter workshop with parliamentarians will be part of the dissemination of key findings.

Goal: Document health inequities in Nairobi, disseminate findings to key decision-makers, and foster policy formulation and implementation regarding the reduction of health gaps between the poorest of the urban poor living in Nairobi slums and other better-off residents

Indicators under consideration:

Neonatal mortality rate (NNR), Infant mortality rate (IMR); Postneonatal mortality rate (PNMR); Child mortality rate (CMR); Under-five mortality rate (U5MR); Vaccination coverage; Prevalence and treatment of acute respiratory infection (ARI), fever, and diarrhea; Size of child at birth; Use of antenatal care (ANC) services; Place of delivery; Assistance at delivery; and Tetanus toxoid vaccination during pregnancy.

Data Sources:

  • 2000 Nairobi Slum Cross-Sectional Survey (2000 NCSS) by APHRC,
  • 1998 Kenya Demographic and Health Survey (1998 KDHS) by NCPD and Macro International.
  • Depending on availability of funding after the first 2-year phase of the NUHEG, future rounds of the NCSS and the KDHS will be used to monitor trends in health equity gaps in Nairobi.
