- Social inequalities in health within countries: not only an issue
for affluent nations. Paula Braveman, (Department of Family & Community
Medicine, University of California, USA) and Eleuther Tarimo, Consultant,
Ministry of Health and Child Welfare, Harare, Zimbabwe. Social Science
& Medicine - Volume 54, Issue 11 Pages 1621-1635, June 2002. Available
online at: Social Science & Medicine "............While interest
in social disparities in health within affluent nations has been growing,
discussion of equity in health with regard to low- and middle-income
countries has generally focused on north-south and between-country differences,
rather than on gaps between social groups within the countries where
most of the world's population lives. This paper aims to articulate
a rationale for focusing on within- as well as between-country health
disparities in nations of all per capita income levels."
- A
review of methods for monitoring and measuring social inequality, deprivation,
and health inequality. Carr-Hill R, Chalmers-Dixon P. Centre for
Health Economics, The University of York. This was written for the UK,
but the parts on measuring deprivation could be helpful to anyone thinking
about that. It is incomplete now, but the authors state they expect
to complete it soon, and will make it available in hard copy as well.
- Measuring poverty and social exclusion. Joseph Rowntree Foundation.

and http://www.jrf.org.uk/knowledge/findings/socialpolicy/d22.asp.
Includes methods and a selection of indicators, maps, and commentary
on extent of social exclusion in Scotland.
- World
Bank Toolkit for evaluating the poverty and distributional impact of
economic policies. Part I, which deals with microeconomic techniques,
may be particularly useful because it is not overly technical and supports
awareness of the issues behind evaluation of policy impacts on poverty
and inequalities. Part II deals with some macroeconomic effects and
is more complicated.
